Biography

A native of England, Cap Fear moved to Canada at the age of ten and began his football career with the Toronto Argonauts in 1920. With the mighty Fear playing outside wing, the Argos were nearly unstoppable.

In 1921 and '22 they lost only once and in his seven seasons with the Argos, Fear led his team to three league titles and one Grey Cup championship. In 1927, Fear played a few games with the Montreal Winged Wheelers before moving to Hamilton. He played with the Tigers from 1928-32, during which time the team claimed two league championships and two Grey Cups. Fear's athletic talents, however, went well beyond the football field.

He played senior hockey with the Ontario Hockey Association and was runner up for the North American welterweight boxing title. Fear was also a champion lightweight stroke at the Argonaut Rowing Club. In a single day, he led his team to victory in the eights and the fours at the Canadian Henley. He also held rowing titles from the Lachine, Detroit, and Dominion Day regattas. A highly valued football player, Fear was named six times to the Eastern Canadian All-Star Team, and was a member of Hamilton's Best-of-the-century Amateur Era All-Star Football Team.
