Biography

The winning skip in the Canadian Brier of 1954, 1957, and 1958, Matt Baldwin is known as a man who brought colour and humour to the curling sheet. A lively joker and showman on the ice, Baldwin was dubbed the "Ziegfeld of curling" and the "brightest figure" in the game. He represented Alberta five times in the Brier, including an undefeated run to the 1957 title. Baldwin's most remarkable year was 1954 when he won three prestigious tournaments-the Brier, the Alberta Curling Association Bonspiel grand aggregate, and the Edmonton ACT car bonspiel-within the space of two months.  Unfortunately, Baldwin never won a world championship as this event was not created until 1959. Outside the curling arena, Baldwin enjoyed a successful career as a petroleum engineer. He was also director of the Edmonton Eskimos Football Club for five years.
