Biography

The great Wes Cutler began his football career at Oakwood Collegiate in Toronto and went on to become an all-star player for the University of Toronto Blues, winning the highest athletic merit the university awarded at that time. A great end, fine blocker, deadly tackler, and exceptional pass receiver, Cutler, in his first year with the Argos in 1933, helped the team defeat the Sarnia Imperials 4-3 to capture the Grey Cup. Cutler won his second Grey Cup four years later as the Argos beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 4-3. The next year, Cutler and the Argos repeated as champions, beating the same Blue Bombers in 1938. Indeed, the Argos destroyed the westerners 30-7 to win their third Grey Cup in six years. To be sure, 1938 was a banner year for Cutler as he helped his team to their fifth Grey Cup since 1909 when the trophy was first introduced. His contribution to the Argos was suitably recognized when Cutler received the Jeff Russel Memorial Trophy, awarded to the Eastern Conference most outstanding player. Wes Cutler was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1968.
